“DTM Legends” v “Allstars” – New format for racing legends

Motorsport to set the pulse racing and environmentally-sound technology, talented juniors and racing legends: when the fourth season of the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup gets underway at the Hockenheimring on 03 May, fans can look forward to a new “race within a race”. From 2013, the Legend Cup will take on a new format – that of a team duel.
The Scirocco R-Cup traditionally attracts big names from the world of motorsport back into the cockpit. Among those who have already confirmed they will be lining up in 2013 are Formula One stars Johnny Herbert, Mika Salo, Christian Danner and Marc Surer, World Rally Champions Juha Kankkunen and Markku Alén, Indy-500 champion Arie Luyendyk and Le Mans winner Emanuele Pirro, as well as DTM stars Nicola Larini, Laurent Aiello, Eric van de Poele, Kurt Thiim and Klaus Niedzwiedz.

The format is new. Rather than competing ‘just for fun’, as they had done previously, the legends will go head to head in a team duel in the future: “DTM Legends” v “Motorsport Allstars”. This way, each weekend will feature a “two-against-two” duel. Points will be awarded in the same format as in the DTM (25-18-15-12) and the scores of each two team members added together. Come the end of the season, fans will be able to see who have their noses in front: the DTM legends or the “Allstars” from a variety of different racing series, including Formula One, rallying and Le Mans. One thing is certain: as well as having a huge amount of fun, the former racing idols will be out to prove how ambitious they still are and who are the best racing drivers in the environmentally-sound Scirocco R-Cup.

The drivers can put their foot down with a clear conscience. Thanks to its innovative natural gas engine, the 285-hp Scirocco gives off significantly less CO2 emissions than conventional, petrol-powered engines. The world’s largest supplier of natural gas, Gazprom, is on board as the new supplier of the environmentally-sound fuel.

The 2013 season features nine races at six events. Nicola Larini and Eric van de Poele will represent the DTM drivers at the season-opener in Hockenheim, while Formula One aces Jan Lammers and Martin Donnelly will line up for the “Allstars”.
